Healthy Diet Essentials
According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), vitamins and minerals are essential for our bodies to develop and function properly. There are 14 vitamins known to be essential to our health: vitamins A, C, D, E, and K, choline, and the vitamins (thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, and folate/folic acid). There are also 15 minerals that are essential to our health: calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, chloride, magnesium, iron, zinc, iodine, chromium, copper, fluoride, molybdenum, manganese, and selenium.
According to 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, it is recommended that people develop healthy eating patterns that will include nutrient-dense foods. Multivitamin and mineral supplements are frequently used as alternatives to natural food intake of such nutrients, but they cannot take the place of eating foods that are rich in important nutrients to sustain a healthy diet.
A variety of foods offer the natural benefit of a vitamin and mineral intake; however, if you are simply unable to sustain enough vitamins and minerals from food alone, you may want to consider multivitamin and mineral supplements to aid in healthy nutrition and disease prevention.
